LinkedIn Post Preview & Character Counter

See where LinkedIn cuts the post with “...see more”, and count the characters before you publish. Free. No signup.

How to use it

This page is a LinkedIn post preview and a character counter. It runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and you do not need an account. The card is a generic feed post, with a stand-in name, so you can judge the words before you publish them.

  1. Paste or write the post in the box. Line breaks and emoji stay exactly as you typed them.
  2. Read the card on the right. It shows about three lines, then "...see more", the way a feed does.
  3. Switch between Desktop and Mobile. The same words wrap differently, so the cutoff moves.
  4. Copy the text, or open it in the text formatter if you want bold or italic on a phrase.

How LinkedIn's see more works

LinkedIn does not cut a post at a fixed character count in the feed. It shows about three lines, then a see more link. A wide desktop card fits more words on each line than a phone. A short line, a blank line, or an emoji that wraps can move the cutoff earlier.

That is why the first two or three lines carry the post. People decide whether to open it from that slice. If the promise, the number, or the question sits on line four, most of the feed never sees it. Write the hook so it still makes sense when the rest is hidden.

The preview uses the same idea. Desktop is about the width of a feed card. Mobile is a narrow phone column. Both use a three-line clamp, so the cutoff follows the wrap instead of a character guess. Click see more to read the rest, and show less to collapse it again.

How to write a hook that gets the click

A hook is the part someone can read without tapping. Lead with a result, a contrast, or a specific number. Save the setup for after the fold. If the first line could belong on any post, rewrite it until it could only belong on this one.

Three short hooks you can steal the shape of:

  1. “How I [achieved specific result] in [timeframe] without [common obstacle].”

Example: How I got my first 100 users in 30 days without spending a dollar on ads.

  2. “I [did X] for [number] days. Here’s what I learned:”

Example: I posted on LinkedIn every day for 60 days. Here’s what I learned:

  3. “Most [audience] think [common belief]. They’re wrong.”

Example: Most founders think they need a big following to get clients. They’re wrong.

LinkedIn character limits

The counter on this page is for a post, out of 3,000 characters. It counts graphemes, so an emoji counts as one character, including a family emoji made of several symbols. A line break counts too. The number turns orange in the last 10 percent of the limit and red after you pass it.

Other LinkedIn fields have their own caps. Comments, headlines, and the About section are shorter than a post. Use the table when you are writing one of those, and keep the post counter for the feed.

Want to add bold or italics? Use our free LinkedIn Text Formatter. Styled letters are still characters, and a styled keyword is not the same string LinkedIn search matches, so leave job titles in normal text.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can a LinkedIn post have?

A LinkedIn post can be up to 3,000 characters. This counter uses that limit. Orange means you are in the last 10 percent. Red means you are past it.

Where does LinkedIn cut off posts?

In the feed, LinkedIn shows about three lines and then see more. The cut follows the width of the card. A phone wraps sooner than a desktop screen, so the same post hides different words.

How many characters appear before see more on LinkedIn?

There is no single character count. Three short lines can be well under 140 characters, and three long lines can be more. Check the desktop preview and the mobile preview instead of counting characters for the fold.

Do emojis count as characters on LinkedIn?

Yes. This tool counts each emoji as one character, including a joined family emoji. A line break counts as well. The text in the box is the text in the preview.

What is the LinkedIn headline character limit?

A headline is about 220 characters. That is much shorter than a post. The About section is about 2,600 characters, and a comment is about 1,250. The table on this page lists each one.

Does a blank line change where see more appears?

Yes. A blank line uses one of the three visible lines. If you open with a line break, the hook gets less room. Put the point in the first line, then add space after it.

Is this LinkedIn character counter free?

Yes. The preview and the counter run in your browser. There is no signup and no fee. Post Board is a separate scheduler if you later want to publish the post on a timer.
